Ustad Bismillah Khan : a musician of the millenium

Bismillah khan

Ustad Qamruddin “Bismillah” khan, oftenreferred to by the title of “USTAD” , was an Indian musician, who played shehnai. He hails from the Buxar district of Bihar, particularly Dumraon. He was born on Mar. 21st,1916 and died on Aug 21,2006.

He became the third classic musician to be awarded with India’s highest civilian honour. On his 102nd birthday, google honoured Ustad Bismillah Khan with a google doodle. At the age of six years, he moved to Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Khan had the rare honour of of performing at Delhi’s red fort on the eve of India’s independence in 1947.

He would regularly go to the Bihariji’s temple to sing the bhojpuri ‘Chaita’.

Ustad’s last wish was to perform at India Gate which could not be fulfilled. The government of India declared a day of national mourning on his death. The government of Bihar has proposed setting up of a museum, a town hall cum library and installation of a life-size statue at his birthplace in Dumraon.
